The Vineyard

Saint Estève’s vineyards stretch over the villages of Uchaux (47 ha), Sérignan (5.5 ha) and Mondragon (2 ha).

Environment:

Saint Estève’s vineyards are located away from main roads in a natural environment. The biggest section is grouped around the Domaine itself, in 17 parcels.

The vines are protected to the north and east by 150 ha of wooded hills (part of the family’s property). Each vine parcel is bordered by pine trees and other Mediterranean plants. During summer nights, the forest breathes cool air onto the grapes, ideal for their balance. The oldest parcel (Tirecul, 7 ha of Syrah and Grenache), is also dedicated to old vines, having been planted in 1963.

The Terroir

The Uchaux and Mondragon parcels face south and south-west. The Sérignan parcels, in the hamlet of Renjarde, face the setting sun. Their gentle slopes allow rain water to drain off naturally. With the wooded hills of the Massif d’Uchaux at their back, Saint Estève’s vines are protected from any climatic excesses.

The geology:

The most noble section of the vineyard, classified as AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d’Uchaux, lies above the Saint Estève buildings and dominates the Orange plain. Soils are made up of chalky quartz and yellow sandstone from the secondary and tertiary periods. The other section of the vineyard, slightly less rocky, comes from more recent (alluvial) formations.

Château Saint Estève d’Uchaux produces great appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) wines in the southern Rhone valley.  The Château is considered a specialist when it comes to producing Viognier.
